General humidity
Uromastyx need a low-humidity environment; this should normally be lower than 40%, and healthy animals should not have any problems shedding at 20-40% humidity. Higher levels can occasionally and temporarily be expected (for example, when fresh greens are placed inside the enclosure), although anything above 60% may cause your uromastyx to develop respiratory problems. If at all possible, the humidity inside the majority of the enclosure should be 20% or less; although ideal humidity levels also vary from species to species, the environment they require is generally very similar.
Exceptions to humidity level
In some situations the uromastyx may require a more humid environment, in which event the keeper can provide a humid hide in which the humidity is much higher. This is especially important for lizards going through a difficult shed or nesting egg-laying chambers for gravid females. The humid hides should be slightly damp and not wet. These humid hides are not always feasible in smaller enclosures, and can actually cause harm if the animal has no other choices and the enclosure is not large enough. Ideally, they should only be provided in large enclosures, in addition to which there should be several dry hides in various heat zones if in fact a humid hide/chamber is provided.
Possible problems
High levels of humidity should generally be avoided because they have been known to be responsible for medical conditions including respiratory infections and tail rot.
Monitoring humidity
You should invest in good-quality digital hygrometers in order to be able to monitor humidity levels at both the hot and cool ends of your enclosure.
