U. maliensis is better known as Mali Uromastyx, Malinese Uromastyx or Malinese Spiny-tailed Lizard.

Description

Malis are a medium-sized uromastyx, reaching up to about 40cm or 16". Males have larger heads then females.

Colouration

Males are dark coloured, often black, with bright yellow speckling on their backs. Females are usually a pale brownish colour on their bodies, and also have a duller yellow speckling on their backs.

Temperament

Malis are active lizards, given enough space.

Geographical disperion

U. Maliensis is endemic to the Sahel Desert in Mali (north-west Africa) and feeds on native grasses and berries. They are also seen in northern parts of Mali and the south of Algeria, where they share their habitat with U. geyri. The climate in their natural habitat is known as a semi-desert to desert climate, with big temperature differences between day and night. The area is very dry and consists mostly of sand with rock formations.
