Zoo Med CE-100 ceramic heat emitter
A ceramic heat emitter (commonly abbreviated to CHE) is a special type of heat source made entirely of ceramic material. They normally come in the same form factor as lightbulbs, and can normally be used in ceramic light sockets rated for their heat output. CHEs are extremely efficient heat sources which have one major advantage over similar wattage heat bulbs - they do not give off visible light and therefore will for affect the lizard's day/night cycle. They are also better than red bulbs, which uromastyx can supposedly see, and which therefore affect their night-time rhythms.

As with other types of heat-producing bulbs, CHEs get very hot, so you must make sure they are out of the reach of your lizards - and yourself! - in order to avoid serious burns. A protective mesh or other barrier from above and the sides can be helpful in preventing accidents. Unlike some other heat sources, however, CHEs can also be used with thermostats and rheostats for best effect. Many can also be used with their own special clamps and sockets.

Despite the intensity of the heat produced, CHEs do not tend to radiate heat over particularly great distances, and so these may not necessarily be a suitable choice for heating large enclosures.
